The quickest, most powerful Polo for the public roads came
out late 2012 with the Golf GTI’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
Pushing out 220 horsepower (162 kilowatts), the Polo
R WRC Street is one mean supermini hitting 62 mph (100 kph) in 6.4 seconds
before topping out at 151 mph (243 kph).
Wimmer wanted to prove there is room for improvement and actually
managed to almost double the engine’s output, now standing at a fantastic 420 hp (309
kW). This makes it 20 hp stronger than the Golf
R400 concept which by the way we are still patiently waiting to see in
production guise.
To extract so much power from the four-banger, the German
tuners upgraded the turbocharger, modified the high-pressure pump, and
installed a custom stainless steel sports exhaust system. The intercooler has
also gone through some changes and the engine’s ECU has been remapped. Thanks
to all of these optimizations, the 2.0-liter now generates a torquetastic 354
lb-ft (480 newton meters), up from the series 258 lb-ft (349 Nm).
Applying this €10,200 / $11,530 stage IV upgrade kit to one
of the 2,500 Polo WRC Street units built by VW will unlock a jaw-dropping top
speed of 174 mph (280 kph). For those willing to spend even more, Wimmer has a
set of 17-inch OZ wheels, a KW coilover suspension, and a K&N air filter.
It all sounds very impressive, but keep in mind this is
still a front-wheel-drive car and with 420 hp on tap, you can imagine it’s
quite tricky to tame this little beast.
